Eating Out?

Fancy exploring the local area and investigating the culture, heritage and soul that comes with the homemade cuisine served up at some of the best restaurants around whilst you’re at it? Take a look at some of our recommendations of where you should definitely cruise by, especially handy if you opt for the B&B option:

Shore Things - 6 Mins Drive

Like most Tobago diners, you will likely be greeted by the owner themselves at Shore Things. Like welcoming you into their home, you will be made to feel special from the first moment. The eclectic atmosphere mixed with an awesome ocean view make Shore Things a must visit, oh and the coffee and cheesecake are a must!

Barcode Sports Bar & Grill - 9 Mins Drive

Not your traditional Tobago dining experience, this sports bar surprises even the locals with its unique mix of sports and great grub. Don't be put off by the sports element, this is a top class place to fill your belly. The Ribs are to die for!

Blue Crab Restaurant - 15 Mins Drive

World renowned for its unique dining experience. Head to Blue Crab and be greeted by the owner Alison and her chef (and husband) Kenneth, and their reputations as the best characters on the island certainly won’t disappoint. The Crab Tree has no menus, so it’s full of delicious surprises. Curried fish, blackened pork and fried plantain are a firm favourite though. The pork in particular is out of this world. Throughout your meal Alison will certainly keep you entertained with tales of her adventures and quirky sense of humour. The Crab Tree Restaurant really represents the essence of Tobago: big characters, big flavour, and big love.

Water Sports

It is easy to get around Tobago and enjoy the various water sports facilities scattered over the island. The many water sports centres offer all types of programmes that The Magdalena Grand tour desk can help you to experience.

Pigeon Point Beach is an ideal spot for water sports. Protected by the Buccoo Reef, here you will find an ideal environment for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The reef protects the Bon Accord Lagoon, Coral Gardens, and Nylon Pools from the open Caribbean Sea, and the peak windsurfing season is the middle of December through to June. There are various clinics and operators available for guests interested in learning one or both of these sports, and the offseason of July through to December provides the ideal time for beginners to learn the ropes.

Other water sports spread across Tobago include Hobie Cat Sailing, kayaking, water‐skiing, wakeboarding, and surfing. Magdalena Grand’s full service concierge desk will be able to assist you with additional information, all you need do is ask.

Tennis

Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort has two tennis courts for you to enjoy, featuring excellent artificial surfaces available for day and night play and complimentary tennis rackets for guests. Families can even relax at the gazebo overlooking the tennis courts with excellent view of the tennis game.

Birding

On the island of Tobago there are over 470 different species of birds. Tobago is a small island but it contains a wide variety of habitats, including tropical rainforest, semi‐deciduous woodland, mangrove swamp, freshwater marshland, and coastal areas. These areas are large enough to support a distinct population of birds.

Ideal Locations

The Main Ridge Forest Reserve, Bon Accord Wetlands, and Tobago’s numerous waterfalls are some of the premier locations to see the island’s most important species of birds. Maximise your wildlife experience by signing up with one of the extremely knowledgeable guides, who will help you dig deeper into the secrets of the rainforest and identify hidden birds by their song, even imitating their calls to bring them into view.

Caledonia Wildlife Bird Sanctuary

You’ll want to visit the Caledonia Wildlife Bird Sanctuary in the former Grafton Copra Plantation at Black Rock, where you can either stroll through the forest spotting birds as you go, or time your visit to coincide with the 8am and 4pm feeding times. You will see birds like the Red‐Crowned Woodpecker, Blue‐Gray Tanager, the Barred Antshrike, and Motmots — be sure to bring your camera.

Little Tobago

Little Tobago is a national bird sanctuary, and is only a 20 minute ride in a glass‐bottomed boat from Tobago. Here you will see large populations of Magnificent Frigatebirds, Brown Boobies, Red‐Billed Tropicbirds, and Terns.

Diving

Scuba Diving is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide, and Tobago offers a great place to discover a fascinating underwater world quite unlike anywhere else. Blessed with nutrient rich waters, the diversity of marine life is astonishingly abundant and stunningly diverse. From experienced divers to beginners, Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort has something just right for you. The resort has an on‐property Dive Training Pool operated by Tobago Reef Masters, complete with state‐of‐the‐art equipment and certified dive instructors.

Dive Sites

Many of the Tobago diving sites are drift dives. Drift diving is easy, just adjust your buoyancy and go with the flow, keeping in mind that it is important to listen closely to dive briefings and follow the Dive Master at all times. At the south end of the island, you can drift along on Flying Reef past huge plate coral colonies and the “soft wall” of Bermuda Chub, keeping an eye open for Nurse Sharks and Sting Rays resting where the reef meets the sand. Water temperatures range from “summertime” highs of 82F to lows of 75F in January and February.

A little further north on the Caribbean side, the wreck of the M/V Maverick sits at 100ft waiting to be explored. Originally named The Scarlet Ibis, she was the first passenger ferry to offer a service between Trinidad and Tobago. Before being sunk as a dive site she was cleaned, inspected, and made safe for divers. Snapper and Rainbow Runners lurk in the shadows inside the car deck and schools of bait fish swirl across the upper deck, which is at a depth of 60ft making it accessible to all diver certification levels.

At the northwestern end of the island The Sisters is a series of rock pinnacles rising up from the deep, where Hammerheads and Mantas are occasionally seen. Equally, London Bridge is the most well‐known of the sites around the St. Giles Islands, off the northeastern tip. This dive can be spectacular because Tarpon, Turtles, and Sharks are frequently sighted as well as Octopus. Another Charlotteville favourite with divers is Boulder Valley at the mouth of Man O War Bay. As divers swim among the huge sponge and coral encrusted boulders, sections of this site look like a brightly coloured carpet.

On the Atlantic side of the island is Speyside. Most of the dives here are drift dives along the sloping reefs around the two offshore islands, Little Tobago and Goat Island. Kelleston Drain is home to what is reputed to be the largest brain coral in the Caribbean — some say in the world. As you come up on the brain coral you will find nurse sharks often resting in the recess underneath, a truly spectacular sight to behold.

Tobago Reef Masters

Tobago Reef Masters also offers fishing trips and combination trips that include a dive and a BBQ when the dive is concluded. Tobago Reef Masters is headquartered at Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort.

Golf

The Tobago Plantations Golf Club is the centrepiece of the Tobago Plantations Estate, the jewel of which is the Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort. The Par‐72 18‐hole course has been woven into an old coconut plantation, and as such this diverse course effortlessly rises out of the landscape by incorporating lakes, woodland thickets, beaches, mangroves, and wild grass. Each hole has the distinctive character of true Tobago golf, and provides a good test of the game for golfers of all levels.

The Course

The flat terrain has been carefully and thoughtfully modified to make best use of the indigenous plants and increase the astonishing diversity of wildlife. Characteristic bunkers are sunk into the greensides, and the course includes a Par 4 that goes out onto the peninsula to enjoy panoramic views of Scarborough, the capital of Tobago, and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean.

In stark contrast to the coastline holes, the rest weave their way through mature palm trees, mangroves, and artificial lakes and wetlands that have been designed to regenerate the local nature.

All the holes have four tee positions, and the Tobago Plantations Golf Course is PGA designed to Championship standards and recently renovated in 2013. It was designed by Bob Hunt and Marcus Blackburn of PGA Golf Management Ltd, the design, development, and management arm of the Professional Golfers’ Association of Great Britain and Ireland. It is a certified member of the “Audubon Co‐operative Sanctuary System” which is one of the environmental programmes offered by Audubon International.

The driving range has 50 Bay Grass tees, pitching, chipping, and bunker greens, and a large practice putting green. The clubhouse is situated between the first and tenth tees and offers quality service from the Fairway Bar & Grill, a pro shop, changing rooms, and a golf bag storage.

Spa

Located on‐site at the Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort, The Equilibrium Face & Body Clinic Ltd. provides a wide range of treatments for women and men that seek to pamper and relax the body, mind, and soul. Sophisticated, revolutionary, innovative, and effective is the only fitting way to describe their exclusive products, treatments, and professional programmes. Your body is opened to textures and aromas that make facial and body care a true ritual of beauty and well‐being, supported by a full array of Caribbean spa resort services.

Spa treatments featured are:

  • Corrective Facials

The salon offers:

  • Hair coloring
  • Hair styling
  • Make-up
