Did you know about all the different ways you can explore Dominican Republic? From the ocean floor to the cloudless skies.

There are a plethora of unique ways to explore Dominican Republic.

If you like nothing more than getting out on an adventure while you’re away, then the DR is a peak destination. But there are so many ways to explore Dominican Republic.

From the skies to the seas you can choose your mode of transport around this awesome island.

In this blog, we’ll break down the most popular modes of transport and tell you more about what to expect while you’re exploring

The best ways to explore the Dominican Republic

  1. Kayaks
  2. Hot air balloon
  3. Segways
  4. Underwater
  5. On foot
  6. ATV
  7. Zipline
  8. Car

In kayaks

Getting out on the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea or North Atlantic (depending on which side of the island you’re on) is never a bad idea.

However, we were more thinking about getting inland and trying a mangrove tour.

Los Haitises National Park is home to one of the largest reserves in the Caribbean and you can take in all the majesty of the local flora and fauna on an incredible kayak tour of the park. From birds to fish and untamed plants, you can see it all in full colour.

By hot air balloon

On the other hand, you may prefer to take to the skies on your Dominican escape.

A Punta Cana hot air balloon tour is the perfect way to get a unique bird’s eye view of this incredible country. You may have glued your head to the window during the flight in, but this perspective is once-in-a-lifetime stuff.

During your aerial adventure, as well as the enchanting views, you’ll get transportation to and from your resort. Plus, as the best time to experience a balloon ride is in the morning, there will be an authentic Dominican breakfast waiting for you complete with champagne and toast.

On Segways

However, if you prefer to keep your feet a little closer to the ground. How about exploring the Dominican Republic on a Segway tour? It’s another super-unique way to experience the majesty of the green inland regions.

As part of the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve Segway Tour, you’ll barrel through 1,500 acres of lush tropical forest. During which you’ll check out the pristine white sands of Serena Beach, feed endangered Rhinoceros Iguanas, and make your way up to Indigenous Eyes. Here 12 freshwater lagoons wait for you to take a refreshing dip.

Don’t tell us that doesn’t sound like an amazing afternoon!

By snorkelling or diving

With all this talk of dipping into lagoons we had to talk about snorkelling in the ocean.

There are a number of incredible dive sites across the Dominican. However, Punta Cana is considered the best location to get beneath the waves.

The great thing about the sites around Punta Cana is they offer a range of submarine landscapes to explore while remaining accessible to divers of all expertise levels.

On foot

From exploring the ocean depths to getting more familiar with the historic sites in the Dominican Republic.

To explore these ancient sites we can employ that oldest of transportation mediums, walking. More specifically, walking around the nation’s capital Santo Domingo.

In the bustling city you’ll be able to take in historic sites like Alcázar de Colón, the first palace built in the Americas. Or how about Monasterio de San Francisco a UNESCO recognised heritage site and one of the oldest monasteries in the Americas.

However, if a journey through the country’s history is what you’re after, you can spy more ancient sites in areas like La Romana, Puerto Plata, and the northern city of Santiago De Los Caballeros.

By ATV

One of the best excursions in the Dominican Republic is crashing around the banana plantations and rolling countryside in an all-terrain vehicle.

On an ATV adventure, you can ride through farmland, taste locally produced coffee, chocolate, and rum, as well as exploring underground cave systems before ending your excursion on Macao Beach – one of the best beaches on the island.

By golf buggy

It may get a little uncomfortable touring the country on a golf buggy. But you should definitely spend some time exploring the local links.

The best golf courses in Dominican Republic rival some of the more well-known venues in the golfing world. With incredible courses designed by greats like Paul Dye, Tom Fazio, and even Jack Nicklaus in stunning areas like La Romana and Punta Cana it’s easy to see why so many travel here for a challenging but spectacular round.

By zipline

If you liked the idea of getting off the ground, but maybe not as high as a hot air balloon, then a zipline adventure may be perfect.

The Bavaro Runners 12 cables ziplining tour is one of the best out there if you want to get above the canopy and away from the towering resorts.

This adventure takes you up into the majestic verdant Anamuya Mountains and allows you to fly through the air taking in all the incredible flora and fauna.

By car

We’re ending our tour of the best ways to explore the Dominican Republic on a slightly strange note. You might think touring the country by car is an amazing way to see more than the touristy spots – and you’d be right.

But what if we told you your car can actually roll uphill in a certain area of the island?

Barahona Hill is a renowned spot in the landscape town of Santa Cruz de Barahona where, if you arrive at the bottom of the hill and take off your handbrake, your car will roll up the hill thanks to a gravitational anomaly.

Explore it for yourself
