Antigua Fam Trip 2009

18/11/2009Christina

I am a beach lover and love this place 365 beaches and all are stunning  with some fabulous reefs for snorkelling or diving.

In my opinion the best 4 beaches are –

Antigua is a relaxed intimate caribbean island where the weather remains warm and dry for most of the year and ‘beach life and watersports’ is what it’s all about. Yachting and sailing facilities are fabulous and Antigua hosts many international yachting events and regattas throughout the year. We hired a ‘dingy’ for the day and sought out a secluded cove to achor for a wonderful day of peace and quiet.

Antigua is a small island and you can drive across it in 45 minutes so everything is really accessible, hiring a car is easy as the locals drive on the same side of the road as us, just watch out for the occasional pot hole.

‘St Johns’ is the capital and has plenty to do, it is full of historicals sites and great for shopping. ‘Jolly harbour’ is packed with shops and market stalls to grab a bargain, duty free shopping is very reasonable. ‘Heritage quay’ complex is a shopping and entertainment area with over 50 duty free shops restaurants and a casino, there is also a vendors mall with over 150 stalls.  You must visit ‘Shirley heights’ the view is outstanding and on a Sunday evening the locals host a barbeque with live music, plenty of rum punch and dancing until the early hours.

Top tips

  • Visit ‘St Johns’
  • Shirley Heights
  • Devils bridge
  • Canopy tour is good fun
  • Only 8 hour flight from UK.
  • Visit Barbuda for its pink sand!
  • Try out the restored pirate ship that sails round the island for day or evening trips, with food, drink and entertainment included.
