The Dominican Republic has always been a popular destination for holidaymakers, famed for its gloriously hot weather and beautiful beaches. But how can you make the most of your visit, and what are the travel essentials that you should keep in mind? We asked our very own Nia for the inside scoop on the Dominican Republic, and this is what she had to say:
Why do you like visiting the Dominican Republic?
It’s worth going just for the local rum. Aside from that, it’s great value for money! You can stay at 5* luxury hotels and resorts for a fraction of the price that you’d pay for other destinations.
What is the one place everyone should try and visit during their time
the Dominican Republic?
Sanoa Island! It’s not technically in the Dominican Republic, but it’s only a short catamaran trip away (a catamaran is a type boat, in case you’re wondering). You can take a speed boat out to the catamaran where you’re greeted with delicious rum and music, and the drinks just keep coming for the duration of the trip. Once you arrive on the island there’s music and traditional Caribbean food and drink, all of which is included in the cost of the excursion. You return via speedboat and stop at a shallow spot in the ocean where you can get out and see colourful starfish!
Which activities would you recommend?
We did a Zip Line excursion which was incredible. It was really good fun, and it also seemed to cure my hangover…
Top 3 most important things to pack when visiting the Dominican Republic?
1. High factor sun cream is a necessity, especially if you’re doing activities like the catamaran trip or the zip line.
2. Money to buy a bottle of the local rum to take home. Have I mentioned how good the rum is?
3. A few dollars to tip the staff, they definitely deserve it, the service is amazing.
Which hotels would you recommend?
Zoetry Agua: this boutique resort only has about 50 rooms, so the service is extremely personal and you’re really made to feel at home
Now Larimar: we stayed here for the majority of my most recent trip, and it had a fantastic atmosphere, the night club was lively and the rooms were really spacious
Sanctuary Cap Cana: this hotel had a completely unique feel. They offer Island Suites, and they’re amazing! There are just two of them and they each literally have their own private island which you access via a bridge from the suite. More than your average holiday!
Any other general tips and advice for visiting the Dominican Republic?
1. The best time of year to visit the Dominican Republic is from December to April. We went in June/July and although it was still incredibly hot it did rain a bit.
2. You have to pay $10 on entry to the country for a tourist card, so make sure you have this handy as there are no machines at the airport
3. Make sure you try the rum. The rum really is amazing. The local coffee is pretty amazing too. But don’t miss out on the rum!
