Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is the newest Secrets property to make its way to the Mexican coastline after opening its doors in November 2015. Sat on the white-sand beaches of the Riviera Maya, it’s got a top location for a picture perfect getaway. So, I was delighted to take a look around to see it for myself. • There’s so much to choose from with 6 gourmet a la carte restaurants ready to feed you up. Take your pick from French, Italian, Mexican and a whole load more.

• Practise your swing with complimentary green fees at Riviera Maya Golf Club.
• Fun fact: Akumal means ‘place of the turtle’ in Mayan. So it’s no surprise it’s known for its green sea turtle population and premium snorkelling.
• Preferred Club rooms have an outdoor Jacuzzi and indoor Jacuzzi too. Two Jacuzzis!
• There’s a tree growing out of the roof of El Patio Restaurant, straight through to the outdoor area of Desires Bar above. Lots of tree love.
• Akumal Beach has been crowned Trip Advisor’s Travellers Choice Award for being one Mexico’s Top 10 Beaches.
Top Tips
• Upgrade to the Preferred Club and enjoy an exclusive area to relax like a pro.
• Looking to try something new? Sample a lobster omelette from the Seaside Grill. Delicious.
• Coffee lovers visit Coco Café, you’ll be in heaven. My favourite was the frozen mocha.
• Give the pool by the beach a whirl, it’s a prime sun-worshipping spot and is just steps away from the Poolside Grill to fuel your sun-worshipping antics.
• Try out the room service. The freshly cooked food is just as delicious as it is in the restaurants. Plus, you get to eat it from your balcony!
• It wouldn’t be right not to mention those incredible strawberry daiquiris.
