The recorded history of Saint Kitts begins with the second voyage in 1493 of Christopher Columbus who sailed past the island. From a distance, Columbus thought the island resembled the shape of Saint Christopher carrying a child Christ on his shoulder. It was only later that it was affectionately nicknamed Saint Kitts.

The Saint Kitts & Nevis National Parliament has declared all land above the 1,000 ft contour a National Forest Reserve, protecting most of the island's lush rainforest in perpetuity. Classified as an American Oceanic Rainforest, it is one of the rarest forest types on the planet, veined with winding trails and a canopy of rich green leaves sprinkled with brightly coloured flowers and the soothing sounds of nature.

Hailed as one of the most beautiful courses in the world, the 18-hole championship Royal Saint Kitts golf course features a magnificent layout on 125 acres with two full holes on the Caribbean Sea and three complete holes on the Atlantic Ocean, recently credited with Audubon certification for its environmentally-friendly practices. The course is par 71 and is considered challenging enough for pros, yet still enjoyable for novice players.

Hikers and mountain bikers will find numerous trails of varying difficulty amongst the rainforest, walled with tropical plants and exotic flowers. More relaxed experiences include four-wheel drive tours and guided walks. Those who crave thrills can soar above the canopy on an eco-friendly zipline with one of the Caribbean's newest zip tours.

Sea Turtle Monitoring

The Saint Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network (SKSTMN) is a community-based non-profit organisation that provides a great way for both kids and adults to connect with Mother Earth. This special conservation project helps preserve critically endangered leatherback, hawksbill and green sea turtles, all of which use Saint Kitts as a nesting ground. Visitors can accompany research teams to see nesting female turtles, and later their hatchlings, on special ecotours with experienced guides.
