We decided to stay over night at a hotel not far from the airport so the Monday would not be too much of a long day. It was a very nice start to the holiday as we didn’t have to rush or be stressed out on the Monday morning and we avoided an early start as we had already checked in online.

I was surprised at how smooth everything went; we took the car to be parked, then got a transfer to the airport where we dropped off our bags. Now we were all ready to explore the duty free shopping within an hour of parking the car. This was great as I love Gatwick, there’s loads of shops to wander around.

We flew with British Airways and after a very comfortable flight landed in Antigua at 14:15 local time. Again we got through customs quickly and went to find our transfer to St James. About 20 minutes later we were on our way to our hotel, Galley Bay, which is about a 20 minute transfer.

We were greeted with cold towels and a glass of rum punch or champagne which were both very welcoming. Once we were all checked in a short drive on a buggy took us over the bridge to our room. On the way a brief tour showed us where the restaurants, bars and guest services were located.

We had a ground floor superior beach front room and as you walked into the room, “Wow! What a view”; you could see straight out onto the beach… it was lovely.

That evening we were feeling quite drained so we had dinner and a few drinks before returning to the room and getting an early night.

Things to do

On the first full day we went for a walk around the resort to get our bearings and see where everything was and what was on offer to do. There is plenty for everyone; if you are the more adventurous type there are plenty of activities and tours to go on, for those of you that like to keep fit there is a gym, bikes for hire and a runners trail. For others that just want to unwind and relax there are plenty of places around the resort for this including the beach, pool and library area.

The most memorable activity for me was Shirley Heights… the view was just stunning. The atmosphere was so upbeat; it was certainly an experience I’ll never forget.

We also attended the Manager’s Cocktail Drinks on Wednesday evening which was great to relax and mingle with some of the other guests. On Thursday evening we went to the BBQ; the food was gorgeous and it was the perfect atmosphere to unwind after a busy day sunbathing.

For me personally this was a relaxing holiday so I had planned not to do a lot! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Galley Bay; it is a gorgeous boutique adults only resort in a beautiful setting, with a very relaxed atmosphere. I will most definitely be back!
