Chris and his wife Liz are currently enjoying their time accomplishing an island hopping adventure in the Caribbean. They have kept in touch with us during their first couple of days and we thought it would be great to share some of their experiences so far. Their adventure starts at the Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa in Barbados…

Day 1 – Breakfast with Beverley & Cocktail Parties

It started with a flying visit to St Lucia – 8hrs 45mins from Manchester to Hewanorra International Airport – Only 45 minutes on the ground and then a swift 25 minute flight across to Barbados.

The shuttle transfer from the airport took about 50 minutes (allowing for 2 drops en-route). I would recommend pre-booking private transfers as they’re cheaper to book in the UK and will save 10-15 minutes.

The hotel presents a modern design, with a free-form pool centre piece, fused with a classic Caribbean feel. The rooms are well presented and with everything you’d need (hair dryer, iron etc) without losing any of the Caribbean charm. It’s the little things here that make a big difference, lavender scented room spray to help you relax, locally produced toiletries in the bathrooms and an early dinner reservation waiting for us on the first night in anticipation of exhausted travellers. Service was friendly and efficient during both dinner and breakfast. At breakfast a visit to see Beverley at the omelette station is a must, whilst there’s also plenty of fresh fruit for those trying to watch their waistlines.

We met up with Mr Peter Charles (the General Manager) for a guided tour before an afternoon of “doing nowt” around the pool. The guys really laid out the red carpet for us, so this place just keeps growing on me!

The Manager’s cocktail party and the Caribbean evening is where local music, Bajan food and cocktails, provided by Roy and Tamesha, will keep you going late into the evening.

After the sounds of the band have died away into the night, the soundtrack to evening cocktails on your balcony is provided by chirping crickets and tree frogs and your early morning call is not provided by the front desk but the two resident Cockerels vying for your attention.

All in all, a very relaxing and enjoyable first day at this quintessentially Caribbean resort.

Day 2 – Cheeky Finches & Coconut Drinks

After a light breakfast we joined Rodney for the “Gulley Tour” where he takes residents on a complimentary tour describing all the flora and fauna you’re going to see in and around the Sugar Cane Club and even finish with a drink from a freshly picked coconut – definitely worth an hour in the morning! A large bottle of mozzie repellent is a must though before you journey out on this one!

The brightly coloured finches will visit you around the pool and the brave ones will even have the fruit out of your drink if you’re not paying attention!

Just as the sun’s setting, head down to the deck at Sandy’s Chattel Bar and you could be lucky enough to see the hotels permanent residents, the local troupe of monkeys.

An early start tomorrow for the flight to St Vincent to check out the Buccament Bay Resort

We’ll be in touch soon,

Chris & The Coconut!

The snippets we’ve had so far makes us excited for what may come next! The resort looks beautiful and makes us all insanely jealous.

We’ll have the next update in Chris & Liz’s journey very soon – keep a look out!
