If you’ve ever thought about embarking on a relaxing Mexican adventure, then chances are you’ve had to look at Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta.

First things first, we’ll put it out there that Cancun is ideal for those looking for a sun-soaked beach holiday with oodles of nightlife. Whereas Puerto Vallarta offers a more laid-back scene perfect for those looking to embrace Mexican culture.

In this blog, we’ll unpack the Cancún vs Puerto Vallarta argument and demonstrate which one is best for you.

Pacific vs Caribbean Coast

On opposite sides of Mexico these two destinations are both unique. Cancún can be found in the state of Quintana Roo, at the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea. There’s a stunning stretch of coastline that includes the resorts of Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya with numerous luxury hotels.

On the other hand, Puerto Vallarta is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico and is surrounded by a lush landscape of jungles and mountains.

Get To Know Cancún

Due to its location on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Cancún was built for tourists, quite literally. Back in the 1970s work began to develop the area from the wetlands, mangroves and jungles it once was to the bustling hotel zone it is today.

The beaches here are picture-perfect with white, powder-soft sand and the glistening waters of the Caribbean Sea. As the area is very tourist orientated you can expect to find plenty of shops and a lively nightlife. However, some people are of the opinion this has made the city feel quite Americanised. Whilst this may be true, we’ll leave this up to you to decide.

Get To Know Puerto Vallarta

Whereas, Puerto Vallarta is a much quieter destination where the pace of life is slower and more relaxed. While tourists are still very well catered for here there’s more of a laid-back vibe.

Expect to see boutique hotels, independent restaurants and smaller shops filled with wonders. Because of this Puerto Vallarta offers a more authentic Mexican experience, with plenty of culture to explore.

Stroll along the cobbled streets and admire the traditional Mexican architecture. Plus, Puerto Vallarta is second only to Mexico City for truly scrumptious cuisine, making it a joy for foodies. Oh, and did we mention, there are also some incredible beaches in Puerto Vallarta.

Which Beach Is Best?

Cancún undeniably has some of the most impressive beaches in Mexico thanks to the pristine white sands. Due to the influx of tourists the beaches can become busy, especially in high season. For a more tranquil beach experience visit one of the best beaches in the area, Playa Delfines. The name itself means Dolphin Beach, named after the pods of dolphins that used to frequent the seas here.  Nowadays sightings are rare, but the beach is still worth a visit.

The beach is one of the most scenic in the hotel zone and offers panoramic views of Cancún without the busy backdrop of high-rise hotels. The beach is public and easily accessible from the resort area so visit this treasure trove for a day, relax under a palapa and enjoy some traditional Mexican fare from one of the many vendors.

Puerto Vallarta also has some decent beaches too. However, being on the Pacific side of Mexico the water is not as crystal clear as in Cancún and the sand not quite as white. Los Muertos Beach is probably the most visited beach in Puerto Vallarta thanks in part to the spectacular pier that was built in 2013. There are plenty of beach bars and eateries for when you wish to take a break from your sun lounger.

Additionally it’s super easy to take a boat trip from Puerto Vallarta to Islas Marietas, Mexico’s hidden beach that remains an uninhabited gem.

Day Tripping

Both areas are packed full of exciting things to see and do.

In Cancún, the nearby Yucatan area has a myriad of cenotes dotted around. These breath-taking natural sinkholes are truly magnificent and provide the perfect photo opportunity.

Meanwhile, Cancún is also within easy reach of other tourist hotspots like Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. So, if you want to get out and about there is plenty of opportunities to see somewhere new.

Whilst you’re in the region, Chichén Itzá is just a 2-hour drive from Cancún and provides a glimpse into Mayan civilisation and a lost world.

Puerto Vallarta itself has some incredible scenery. The jungle and mountains surrounding the bay are spectacular. Plus, the landscape is much more lush compared to Cancún due to the proximity of the Sierra Madre mountain range. Activities here include a zipline experience through the jungle, definitely one for the adrenaline junkies among you.

On the other hand, you can opt for a boat tour through Banderas Bay with the added bonus of a spot of humpback whale-watching if you happen to visit between December and March.

Whereas, if culture is more your thing, then don’t miss out on the chance to visit some of the oldest towns in Mexico like Talpa or the historic town of San Sebastien del Oeste.

Bright Lights & City Nights

When it comes to nightlife Cancún vs Puerto Vallarta depends on what you’re looking for.  Being a modern resort Cancún has its fair share of nightlife and when night falls the bars are really lively. One of the most famous spots for holidaymakers to enjoy is Coco Bongos. This humungous bar has many different levels, and the entertainment is second to none. Dancers and singers entertain the packed-out crowds nightly.

Conversely Puerto Vallarta does have bars and nightclubs but not to the same extent as in Cancún and the emphasis here isn’t on partying. However, the Zona Romantica is widely regarded as one of Latin America’s largest gay-friendly neighbourhoods.

So Where Should I Choose?

To sum up, if it’s a matter of Cancun vs Puerto Vallarta, we’d recommend Cancún for those looking for fantastic all-inclusive resorts, stunning beaches, a lively holiday and the close proximity to some epic sights. Whereas we’d recommend Puerto Vallarta for holidaymakers who are looking for a little more from their holiday than just sun, sea and sand. A more authentic and charming holiday awaits here.
