From the moment we stepped off the plane, to boarding it again on the return journey the Bajan people were the spectacular highlight of my first adventure to Barbados. Their approach to life and the way they look after visitors to their gem of a Caribbean island with such enthusiasm is simply first class!
Travelling without my two children was a little strange. Nevertheless I took careful note of the hotels and trips that would be best for us if we were to return on a family holiday. I can honestly say I have never been anywhere where the kids clubs are so amazing!
Turtle Beach
From the family-friendly suites to educational kids activities, marine programmes and golf lessons, there’s fun to be found for guests of all ages at Turtle Beach! The activities on offer range from Calypso dancing and limbo lessons to beach cricket and scavenger hunts. Kids can have fun with Nintendo Wii, foosball and ping pong in the Flying Fish Kids Club, where trained staff lead them in a variety of games. Like the turtles for which the hotel was named, you’ll want to come back again and again!
Crystal Cove
Located on a beach cliff off Barbados’ platinum West coast, the all-inclusive Crystal Cove resort offers a range of activities amid lush gardens and multi-level lagoon-like pools. Swim through a cascading waterfall and order a cocktail from The Cave Bar, or take the family on an exciting off-site adventure like swimming with the turtles. Kids will find it hard not to have a blast when staying at Crystal Cove, where they can participate in group activities such as beach volleyball and tennis, or even off-site adventures such as surfing excursions and swimming with the turtles. There’s also an Aqua School and complimentary water sports – you’re sure to find plenty of activities that the whole family can enjoy!
Not only are there amazing kids clubs, activities and tours provided by the hotels, there is also a whole heap of fun to be had by families across the island. I didn’t realise how much there was on this small island until I saw it for myself! One of the impressive things about Barbados is that the island offers an intoxicating mix of tropical family escapism. It has more on offer for children than almost any other in the Caribbean.
For animal lovers, there is an aquarium, zoo and wildlife reserve. If you enjoy the outdoors you will love Harrison’s cave (a crystallized limestone cavern) or a stunning catamaran trip across the tranquil Caribbean waters, and for all you dare devils out there the zip lining and Jeep safaris on offer are simply exhilarating! For the older children, Bubble Adventures offers them the chance to learn to scuba dive in safe circumstances, and of course don’t forget the myriad beautiful beaches on offer for those lazy days to sit and relax, play in the sand and sea and expel some cooped-up energy!
I was wowed by Barbados. The atmosphere, the people, the beaches, the hotels… it was all simply perfect! There really is something for everyone and it is most definitely the next destination on my list for a family holiday.
