InFocus Snapshots: Adventures in Antigua

28/11/2015Tom

After a valiant return to Barbados, Team InFocus has made their début appearance in Antigua. Their mission is simple: uncover the best bit of Antigua and commit them to the camera lens. InFocus is a video encyclopaedia for the modern holidaymaker, and the new chapter for Antigua has already been laced with adventure and intrigue. Our journey, with all its meanderings and musings, is an essential part of the InFocus process, so here are some from-the-set thoughts on some of the best discoveries we’ve made so far.

Antigua’s greatest hits

D-Boat
D-Boat is a new activity destination for Antigua, which has reclaimed an old boat docked in the middle of the sea. The restoration has produced a new type of waterpark that provides fun for all ages. Sea slides and sea trampolines are in the mix, as well as adding new sense of verticality to water-borne hilarity: the Fat Boy. The Fay Boy involves you and a friend teaming up to be flung into the ocean, one of you jumping onto an inflated platform that launches your unsuspecting partner into the sea. It’s great fun and something new for Antigua. definitely a must see.

Stingray City
One of the lesser-known Antiguan experiences is Stingray City, an off-beat attraction that allows you to socialise with wild stingrays. About 5 minutes from the pick-up point you’ll slip into the Caribbean Sea and be greeted by some not-so-little slippery stingrays, and you’ll be taught how to safely hold and interact with the stingray locals. It’s all the excitement of a diving adventure without the need to venture into the deep sea, and  once you’ve had your fill of stingray action you can head back to shore for a celebratory rum punch. Other than Grand Cayman, this is the only place in the Caribbean that offers this interactive stingray experience. It’s not to be missed, Holidaymaker.

Excellence Circumnavigation Tour
An excellent option for some nautical sight-seeing around Antigua is the Excellence Circumnavigation Tour. You’ll hop onto a catamaran filled with food and beverages, and you’ll take in the rugged shorelines, some pioneering snorkelling, and even have a peep at some celebrity homes. It’s a great way to see the wonderful sights of Antigua all in one go, without the worry of overheating or simply getting lost. A highlight of the trip is a visit to Englishman’s Harbour, the place we’d eventually see from the top of Shirley Heights. Some of the island’s most popular resorts are on the route, including Sandals Grande Antigua, Jolly Beach Resort, and Galley Bay Resort, so it’s a perfect way to go window shopping for your next holiday.

Shirley Heights
Shirley Heights is the place to be on a Sunday night. We’d highly recommend arriving in time for sunset, because the cliff-edge affords a spectacular view over Englishman’s Harbour. As the sun is absorbed by the horizon the music kicks in, the drinks flow, and the atmosphere glistens with proverbial electricity. Steel pans are the sound of the night, and an authentic barbecue serves the best ribs we’ve ever tasted. Locals and tourists alike mix and mingle at Shirley Heights, but it never feels crowded; it’s just great fun right into the small hours. It’s the kind of socialising that only exists in the Caribbean, and Shirley Heights should be a staple of any Antiguan getaway.
