What It’s Like Swimming With the Bahamas Pigs For Your Birthday?
Find out what happened when Alice went swimming with the world-famous Bahamas pigs. Celebrating your birthday swimming with the Bahamas pigs sounds pretty special, right? Well, the big 3-0 was on the horizon for our travelling titan Alice, and there was only one place she was going to spend it. In this blog, we’ll hand over to Alice for a complete rundown of her celebratory stay at Sandals Royal Bahamian. As well as that awesome trip to see the aquatic oinkers. How was the trip, Alice? Oh, it was absolutely amazing! The hotel has just been refurbished in January, so everything was brand spanking new. We stayed on a new island recently built in Cupid’s Cay in one of Sandals Royal Bahamian’s Island Village Walkout Butler Hideaway Villa Suites with a Private Pool. In the middle of the resort, they’ve built a new open-air hub called Coconut Grove. This is where all the nightly entertainment takes place. There are sofas and swing chairs in the sand, so you can enjoy a show in super-comfort. Plus, two covered campervans offer trendy tacos and coffee. Trust me, the coffee van does the best coffee at the resort. Another nice touch was that these campervans also sold crepes after the shows for anyone who fancied a walking home snack! Aside from all those bits, there’s also the incredible beach which just looks like a picture you’d see in a brochure. The white sand and water are immaculate. I would say, out of all the Sandals Resorts I’ve been to (including our St Lucia trip), this one was my favourite. So, what was the room like? The room was brilliant. It didn’t have the problem that most swim-up rooms face which is that they’re usually in the shade. This one had maximum sun all day until about 7 or 8 pm. So it was great if you’d been at the pool all day as you could go back to the room and still be able to enjoy the sun from the comfort of your own space. The outside area also had large sun loungers and the pool lights up in different colours at night, like a “disco pool”. Having said all that, we didn’t spend lots of time in the room. But having the luxury of being able to retreat to that amazing exterior space was perfect. What are the resort vibes like? To get a decent snapshot of how broad the spectrum is at the resort you just need to look at the two pools. Both show that every type of traveller is well catered for her. So, the pool which is closer to the spa is a quieter area where you can just have a chill on your sun lounger and enjoy the ocean views. Alternatively, though, the pool on the other side of the central hub offers a bit more of a party atmosphere. There’s music, activities and entertainment if you want it. You have the choice of creating the holiday that you want. Whether you want fancy a quiet stay, non-stop fun, or a mixture of both, you can have it. Taking an island-hopping tour to see the pigs Seeing the pigs in the Bahamas for my birthday was so good, that I could cry. We did the pigs as part of a larger tour which took us to a couple of different places via boat. So I’ll break the trip up into 6 parts: Feeding iguanas Swimming with the pigs Lunch on Black Point Island The sand bar Swimming with sharks Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane wreck The world-famous wild iguanas We got our transfer from the resort to the speedboat and were taken on to Allen Cay which is home to Iguana Rock. During the boat ride, you’re given free drinks, as well as some fruit and veg to feed the iguanas. Then you get 20 minutes to feed and watch the animals. But, I should say, these are uninhabited islands, so when you arrive you literally have to jump off the boat into the sea. The pigs From the iguanas, we continued on to Big Major Cay which is where the pigs are. There are other places in the Bahamas with pigs but this is the most famous spot. The Bahamas pigs were so friendly, they’re almost like dogs because they’re so used to people coming and feeding them. If you tell them to sit they’ll sit and you can feed them. Also, if you show them your empty hands they’ll leave you alone. Some of them are gigantic too! But, again, because it’s an uninhabited island they swim up to you to be fed so it doesn’t feel at all like a zoo or a forced interaction at all. They were just being pigs in the Bahamas and we were there with them, which was an amazing experience. Because we were doing the island-hopping tour we only spent about 20-25 minutes with them. So, from there, we went on to a place called Compass Cay for some lunch. Lunch at Black Point When you get Black Point island, you’re booked into a local restaurant which serves up Bahamian food. When you sail up to it you can see sharks and stingrays swimming around. But on the way, the tour guides were pointing out incredible things to us like dolphins swimming by the boat and local celeb spots. For example, we saw islands owned by Steven Spielberg and Johnny Depp. Plus, we also saw the place where Jay Z and Beyonce stay when they’re in the area. The sand bar After lunch, we were taken to the sand bar which is a stretch of sand exposed by the sea at certain times. If the sea and sand at the resort looked good, this place was like heaven. It’s super quiet, perfect for lots of Instagram snaps. When they dock, you jump off straight into the azure water. We stayed for a while and had drinks served from […]

The Diary of a Teetotaler on Holiday in the Bahamas
What’s it like being teetotal on holiday? Phil gives us his perspective of being in the Bahamas and away from the booze. Our man Phil doesn’t drink and he recently got back from a luxury break in the Bahamas. So that got us thinking, what’s it like being teetotal on holiday? Phil Goes Teetotal on Holiday Now, before we start, we’re not saying that we spend every day on holiday three sheets to the wind. But, we think it’s safe to say we all enjoy a cocktail or two in the sun. But, you can still have an awesome time under the Caribbean rays without partaking. With that in mind, our resident non-drinker, Phil, jetted off to Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort Spa & Offshore Island recently. The trip was meant as a joint honeymoon and birthday celebration for his new wife, Beth. So what does a celebratory week in the Bahamas look like when you don’t drink? We asked him to keep a diary of his break and here it is! Day 1 After our 9hrs 50 mins British Airways flight from Heathrow direct to the Bahamas, we finally touched down in Nassau. We chose a direct flight because all other connecting services featured a long layover in Miami. The flight out was great and the food on the plane was lovely. There was a great selection of non-alcoholic beer which was perfect for me, and for anyone else thinking of going teetotal on holiday. Arriving in Nassau we were given a traditional welcome and, once through security, we came to the Sandals desk. After giving over our details the transfer was called immediately. When our private transfer came it turned out to be a Rolls Royce, which was an amazing shock! Great service all-round, but this may have been because we booked a Butler Elite level room. When we landed at the resort our butler took us on a tour of the resort in the morning and we decided to spend the rest of the day in the pool. She also introduced us to our room and poured Beth a glass of champagne. But when she found out I didn’t drink she made me a mocktail from the minibar there and then, which was amazing. We tried the Italian restaurant Tesoro for breakfast and dinner today. Meanwhile, lunch was at Kanoo. The teriyaki beef here was so sweet and tasty! I can recommend the lemonade too. Top Tip A top restaurant tip from me is, don’t worry about tipping the staff. Tips are included on the all-inclusive, so the staff aren’t expecting anything from you in that regard. In fact, some waiters in the restaurants even have badges saying “no tips” etc. Day 2 Following on from spending some time relaxing yesterday and coping with the jet lag, we decided to explore a little. This exploration took us over to the private Sandal’s Island. We lazed around on the beach and enjoyed lunch at Aralia House. The beach and restaurant were great and much quieter than the one at the mainland resort. In addition, if you’re not much of a fan of the dance music played out around the pools, then the island offers a welcome reprieve. A word to the wise, though, the ocean water looks incredible, but it is colder than I was expecting. So if you’re thinking of going for a swim, it’s best to just run straight into it. Don’t dip your toe or else you’ll never make it in. Today we had breakfast at La Plume and, I have to say, I think this was the best restaurant for breakfast, the steak and eggs were incredible. Then, after we got back from the private island, we enjoyed dinner at Gordon’s pier restaurant which was great. However, I wouldn’t recommend going to Gordon’s on a rainy day, the alfresco dining doesn’t mix well with the wet stuff. Day 3 Today we decided to journey over to downtown Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. We booked a taxi through our butler ($40 round trip with tip) and visited the Pirates of Nassau museum. As you can probably imagine, we learned quite a lot about the history of piracy in the Bahamas, which was fascinating. Before heading off to Nassau we were back at Kanoo for an island-style buffet breakfast. I won’t say much about our lunch because we just grabbed a quick McDonalds in the city (because why not?). At dinner, we tried Butch’s Chop House. An American-style grill joint where we had some very tasty steaks. I had the T-Bone medium-rare and it was cooked to perfection. Scroll the pics below to see the steak. Day 4 After all the fun and adventure of Nassau, we decided to have a beach day. We had originally planned to do the swimming with pigs excursion, but the trip had been cancelled because of bad weather. There had been a storm just off the USA and the winds were getting a bit higher than usual. For dinner, we settled down to an evening of stunning French food at La Plume. If you’re not a fan of French cuisine I wouldn’t be too put off as the menu was far from exclusive. But it was all delicious no matter the origins. Day 5 That day of rest set us up perfectly for the Island Safari excursion. We travelled from the resort to the safari base before following a route along one side of the island. Although there wasn’t much off-roading happening, most of the route was mapped out along tarmacked roads. However, the trip was still enjoyable. We were taken off to a cave area that pirates use for felonious practices. If you get a picture in the conch-shell throne, take my advice – watch your legs on the pointy parts of the shells, they can come keen. From there we moved on to a secluded beach where you could buy super-strong but very tasty (so Beth tells […]

From the moment that I arrived at Sandals Royal Bahamian, I fell in love with the Bahamas. Sandals is renowned for romance, luxury and impeccable service and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The hotel has not one, but two amazing white sandy beaches with turquoise waters and it also has an offshore island with free boat transfers from the resort to the island both in the daytime and the evening. Here are some fast facts and top tips from my amazing trip.
